war in Mantua 1546 erschienen. Es bat jedoch Herr Gr. J. As- 
coli, Zigeunerisches Seite 123, nachgewiesen, dass die Wörter 
und Sätze, welche die Zingana mit ihrem verdorbenen Italienisch 
mengt, vulgär arabisch sind.

I. Boorde’s Text. 
The xxxviii chapter treteth of Egypt, and of theyr 
mony and of theyr speclie. 
Egipt is a countrey ioyned to Iury. 
The countrey is plentyfull of wine, corne, and Hony. 
Ther be many great wyldernes, in the which be many 
great wylde beastes. In the which wildernes liuid many holy 
fathers, as it apperyth in vitas patrum. The people of the 
country be swarte, and doth go disgisyd in theyr apparel, con- 
trary to other nacyons: they be lyght fyngerd, and vse pyking; 
they haue litle inaner, and euyl loggyng, and yet they be 
ples(a)unt daunsers. Ther be few or none of the Egipcions 
that doth dwel in Egipt, for Egipt is repleted now with infy- 
dele alyons. There mony is brasse and golde. yf there be 
any man that wyl learne parte of theyr speche, Englyshe and 
Egipt speche foloweth.

2. How farre is it to the next towne? Cater myla bar- 
foras? 
3. You be welcome to the towne. Maysta ves harforas. 
4. Wyl you drynke some wine? Mole pis lauena% 
5. I wyl go wyth you. A vauatosa.

7. Drynke, drynke! for God salce! Pe, pe, cleue lause! 
8. May de, geue me bread and wyne! Achae, da mal 
manor la veue.
