Unermüdlich geht die dem eigentlichen großen Ziele
dienende Lebensarbeit an der Hauptaufgabe weiter, die
sich Jouguet selbst gestellt hatte, seit vor Jahren der
Athener Studienzeit, ehe er von Griechenland nach Ägyp-
 gekommen war, und „l’Athenien“, „der Athener“ hieß,
er dem Wehen attisch-griechischen Geistes in Ägypten
folgte, dort wo im Gebiet hellenischer Siedlung auch demo-Kratische
Kratische Ordnung eine Stätte der Bürgerfreiheit geschaffen
 hatte, wo nicht orientalisch-absolutistischer Befehl,
sondern Bürgerüberlegung das gute richtige Recht zu finden
 unternahm. Wie mußten den Künder hellenistischer
 Vie municipale im römischen Ägypten die Papyri
aus Oxyrhynchus (Vol. XII, 1496—1501) überraschen,
