arrows are rnuch more commonly employed by the natives of 
Bougainville Straits, than by the St. Christoval natives/ 
G, p. 72. — ,The use of the bow is universal in the islands 
with which we are concerned; but the bow is not universally 
the chief war weapon. The spear is in some islands so con- 
spicuously the fighting weapon that it is easy for one who has 
seen a good deal of native life to deny that the bow is used in 
war, though, as in Florida for example, the use of it is not 
so very rare. In Florida, Guadalcanar, Ysabel, San Cri- 
stoval, and to a less degree in Malanta, the proper thing

Ich meine, dass die hier angeführten Punkte sowohl in 
sich selbst, als auch ihrer Anzahl nach schon bedeutend genug 
sind; insbesondere weise ich auch noch darauf hin, wie trefflich 
sich Guppy’s und Codrington’s Angaben hier ergänzen, indem 
durch beide Angaben die südlichen Salomonsinseln als eigen- 
thümlich dastehendes Centrum offenbar werden, zu dem dann 
Guppy die Abweichungen der nördlichen Salomonsinseln, Co- 
drington dagegen die der Banksinseln und der Neu-Hebriden 
aufzählt, Abweichungen, die aber zu sich gleich sind, ganz so, 
wie es auch oben (S. 55) für die sprachlichen Verhältnisse con- 
statiert werden konnte. Es wäre also zu wünschen, dass die 
Anthropologen und Ethnologen von Fach die Aussichten, welche 
sich da eröffnen, weiter verfolgen möchten, um festzustellen, 
oh sich nicht auf diesem Wege eine wissenschaftlich befrie 
digende allseitige Lösung des Problems von der Herkunft 
der Polynesier gewinnen Hesse, eine Lösung, die unzweifelhaft 
auch die richtige Würdigung der Melanesier selbst um einen 
guten Schritt vorwärts bringen würde.
